Taylori - 2010 Vireya of the Year

We are growers of vireya (semi-tropical) rhododendrons for the homeowner, landscaper and collector. We are pleased to offer a variety of hybrid and species vireya, plus select Hawaiian native hibiscus for immediate shipment or contracted growing. See the Ordering page in our Catalog. We are currently certified for shipment of plants to the USA mainland and have successfully shipped internationally. Nonetheless many of our sales are local and we invite both locals and visitors to stop by the nursery on Saturdays to see what's blooming and for purchases at our web prices. Also, for local customers, there are some larger plants available at the nursery.

We add varieties and images on our online catalog both as an ordering guide and, especially in the case of lesser available varieties, as a celebration of the immense range of Vireya Rhododendrons. We show multiple pictures of varieties to show their different aspects both inside the greenhouse and in the garden. Hopefully we will whet your appetite for a few of the fine plants through these pages.

Availablity

We are currently growing, in the greenhouse or in the display gardens, over 400 species and hybrid vireya rhododendrons. It is our goal to make available any of these varieties to both our local and worldwide customers. However, the greenhouse is just so big and growing space on our propagation and export benches is always at a premium. We can not grow all varieties in large quantities. Luckily however our customers typically focus on a subset of this large number. These varieties have such popular characteristics as richer and more vibrant colors, a larger number of flowers in the truss, or a good-looking growth habit and so forth. Yet we do not want to slight those cutomers that ardently desire a low-demand jewel of a plant or unusual species that have a special place in their gardening endeavors.

So our solution is to grow a small quantity of many varieties and a somewhat larger number of a few. We will be establishing an availability list that is updated probably at a leisurely pace. The cycle time for most vireya cuttings is five to six months for a nice rooted cutting (this may vary by variety) and twelve to eighteen months for a nice sized plant to start in the landscape or sunroom, but not too big for reasonable shipment costs. We are trying to tune our propagation cycles to keep the bulk of our stock on hand at this year to year and a half age. And, to add to all the other uncertainties, we occasionally are surprised by a large order for one variety and run out quickly!

Please check out our catalog and select the colors or growth habits or whatever characteristics you might be looking for. Then send us an email listing what you are after and we will respond promptly. Most often we will have nice plants of the varieties you are looking for. If not, many vireya varieties have similar characteristics (see our Lists) and we will nearly always have a substitute on hand. And if we don't, or you wish to order a larger number of less expensive plants, consider placing an order for rooted cuttings in early fall (Northern hemisphere) for delivery in the spring. Just like planning your seed order for the garden.
